NASA reported that a contrast-enhancement technique used for satellite imagery is helping archaeologists identify faded ancient images that are invisible to the naked eye.
The Dstretch tool, based on the “decorrelation stretch” algorithm, has revealed or clarified ancient imagery at Angkor Wat and sites in Norway, Egypt, Canada and elsewhere. It is built on a plugin developed for the NIH’s open-source ImageJ software.
