A study from the University of Cambridge’s Cambridge Programme on AI Science & Policy (CASP) found that Boko Haram factions used major AI chatbots including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Meta AI and DeepSeek for attack planning, weapons troubleshooting and explosive-device design.
Based on interviews with 27 former members conducted in 2025 and 2026, the research says some users successfully bypassed safeguards to obtain technical assistance during operations. The findings suggest AI use had moved beyond isolated experimentation and become part of the groups’ dedicated units and internal training programs. (Cambridge AI Bilim ve Politika Programı)
