MIT Lincoln Laboratory researchers developed an experimental communication system capable of transmitting data through Arctic ice.

The prototype modem uses magnetic fields as an alternative to radio signals, which rapidly weaken in seawater, and achieved a through-ice transfer rate of approximately 1.2 kilobytes per second. The technology could eventually support a distributed monitoring network that relays sensor data through drones or satellites.
