ESA published its 2026 Space Environment Report, showing that collision risks from satellites and orbital debris are increasing rapidly.
More than 4,000 payloads were placed in orbit through over 300 launches in 2025, while an average of more than three intact satellites or rocket bodies reentered the atmosphere each day. ESA’s sustainability index rose from approximately 4 to 50 in one year, leading the agency to conclude that active debris removal is necessary.
