The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into Tesla’s safety-compliance certification for the driverless Cybercab.

The agency will examine the technical data and processes used to determine that the vehicle, which lacks traditional human controls, complies with federal motor-vehicle safety standards. The inquiry follows the Cybercab’s commercial deployment in Austin.
